Fellow former child stars Demi Lovato and Raven-Symoné have a history together that one of them didn’t even remember until the other offered a hilariously direct reminder.
Lovato, 32, reached out to Symoné, 38, about appearing in a documentary she’s directing, and she opened her speech with some heartfelt flattery.
“When we first talked on the phone about this project, I said, ‘I’ve been watching you That’s so Ravensuch an inspiration,'” Lovato recalls in the documentary Child starwhich premiered September 17 on Hulu. “You were like, ‘Bitch, I was on your show!’ And I said, ‘Oh, my God, she was.’ ”
The play was Sonny with a Chancewhich ran for two seasons on the Disney Channel from 2009 to 2011. Symoné appeared in a 2010 episode of the sitcom titled Lovato.

In the documentary, which is Lovato’s directorial debut, the actress and singer talks about the pressure she faced as a child because she was overwhelmed with work in Hollywood while also being the breadwinner. The demands of the industry have led to fatigue, depression and a host of other mental and emotional ailments.
“I was a teenager and I was just exhausted,” Lovato says in the document. “I was diving into the ground. We were all just flying around, figuring out how to swim.”

It influenced her to forget Sonny with a Chance a guest appearance by Symoné, who at that time was already a big star with credits like That’s so Raven and The Cosby Show.
“It’s part of my separation that I don’t really remember that much of my show that I was on,” Lovato explains. “But I do remember how hard it was to work because I was in so much pain and I was in pain.”

Symoné, for her part, is understanding – and she was equally understanding then.
“I mean, you weren’t the best person,” she says. “You didn’t say, ‘Welcome!’ You didn’t do that, but being the type of person that I am and being in the industry as long as you have, and I understand that your eyes get resentful, it’s like, ‘Something’s going on there.’ ”

Symoné is just one of the former child stars Lovato talks to in the documentary.
He also sits with Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson, JoJo Siwa, Christina Ricci, her Camp Rock actress Alyson Stoner and her sister Madison De La Garza (Desperate Housewives) as they discuss their careers and the dangers of becoming famous too early in life.
