Profession

After completing his formal education, Ravi Shankar Upadhyay started working as a teacher in 2014 in a local school in Chhapra, Bihar.

In October 2018, Ravi Shankar Upadhyay launched the ‘Roti Bank, Chapra’ initiative. The idea of Roti Bank was inspired by the philanthropic initiative of Kishore Kant Tiwari and Roshan Patel, founders of All India Roti Bank Trust in Varanasi. In 2022, he said in an interview with the media that he felt sad and distressed when he saw poor people starving and sleeping on the streets. He said,

Because there are also many poor people in our city, who are forced to go to bed hungry every night. People often sleep at intersections, train stations, bus stops and on the roadside without eating anything. It made me uncomfortable and sad to see these helpless people, but there was nothing I could do for them. “

Initially, Ravi Shankar’s team consisted of 4-5 members including his close friends Satyendra Kumar, Abhay Pandey, Ram Janam Manjhi and Bipin Bihari. They started this social work on October 10, 2018, Dussehra. On the first day, they distributed food to seven hungry poor people.

The team, led by Abhay Pandey, general secretary of Chapraroti Bank and railway traffic inspector, enters the city at 9 pm every day to deliver food to the needy.

Ravi Shankar Upadhyay had said in a media conversation that initially, food was prepared and distributed from their homes. However, under the influence of the slogan “Khushi ke Rang, Roti Bank ke Sang”, residents of the city started coming forward to provide meals to the poor on various occasions like birthdays, wedding anniversaries, pujas or other auspicious events. Later, he and his team built a separate kitchen for the Roti Bank organization and named it ‘Maa Annapurna Community Kitchen’. Then they hired two people at minimum wage to cook.

According to Ravi Shankar, each food package includes 4 kg chuda, 2 kg faruhi, a large packet of biscuits, namkeen, milk powder and children’s soap. In 2020, during the challenges of COVID-19, the organization provided food to those in need and coordinated meals for migrant workers.

Every year, during the monsoon floods in Bihar, Ravi Shankar Upadhyay and his team survey areas where people need food. Thereafter, members of Roti Bank (Chhapra) distributed food packets to these helpless people in designated areas.
