Ree Drummond Says Finding Out She’s Going to be a Grandma Felt ‘Totally Different Than I Thought It Would’ (Exclusive)

Ree Drummond has known her daughter Alex was pregnant since Mother’s Day — but she’s still getting used to the thought of becoming a grandmother.

The A pioneer star announced that her eldest daughter Alex, 27, and her husband Mauricio Scott are expecting their first child – Ree’s first grandchild. While talking to PEOPLE about her new Walmart line of small appliances, the Food Network star opened up about her raw reaction to the big reveal.

“My God, it’s a completely different feeling than I thought it would be,” she admits. “Since we’ve kind of become empty nesters, Ladd and I feel like we’re just done raising our kids—we’re not even done! A couple of them are at university, so are we more raising our children.”

Pioneer Rea Drummond’s daughter Alex is pregnant, expecting her first child with husband Mauricio Scott: ‘Precious gift’

Alex and Scott celebrated three years of marriage on May 1st. Still, Ree said she didn’t expect to take on the role of grandmother so soon.

“We weren’t necessarily in a big rush to get into the grandparent phase,” Ree laughs to PEOPLE. “I thought when I finally heard the news, whenever it was, I would feel even more ‘Oh no, here he is.’ But instead, what I think about the most is – this is my honest answer – how happy I am for my daughter and her husband.”

This new phase of life for their family also brought a lot of nostalgia for Ree.

“When I think back to the days when my kids were babies and those years, I mean, I can hardly look at old pictures because it was such a precious, fun time,” says Ree. “I’m so happy that he’s going to enter that period of his life. There is simply nothing better in the world.”

The author of the cookbook already has the gender of Alex’s baby in mind.

“I feel like it’s a boy, but then again, I have a 50-50 chance of being right,” he jokes. “It’s really just a guess.”

Regardless, Ree says the growing family will be thrilled.

“I know they’ll love either one. Alex and her sister Paige were the first in the family, so in a way they see the advantages of having older girls. I think Alex would love to have a girl, and Mauricio has such a happy nature that he’ll love whatever they have,” she says.

Ree and Ladd are also parents to Paige, 24, Bryce, 21, Jamar, 21, and Todd, 20. Alex works with his mom at A pioneer blog and helps coordinate various events and photo shoots, including those with Ree’s longtime Walmart Pioneer Woman collection.

Her latest collaboration with Walmart is a home appliance in a sleek and modern new look. With a “linen stained” design and wood-colored handles, the new 2-slice toaster, 6-liter slow cooker and 6-liter pressure cooker are meant to blend into any kitchen’s aesthetic. The “rustic, old-fashioned feel” ushers in a new era for the Pioneer Woman collection.

“Anyone who knows my line knows that I’m a big fan of flowers and that’s kind of the aesthetic of my line,” Ree tells PEOPLE. “[I’m] I’m definitely not going to turn my back on flowers, but we’re kind of evolving and bringing a new direction — a little more muted direction for 2025.”

The collection also includes more cookware for baking and cooking like iron pans and ovens, but the new small appliances are a new option for cooks of all generations, says Ree, especially the toaster.

“Everyone needs a toaster, whether you’re a college freshman or a 55-year-old mother of five like me,” she says. “From day one, the Pioneer Woman look was really meant to be layered into what you already have. That’s why I love seeing how people work in pieces in their kitchens.”
