Revanth Reddy

Revanth Reddy is an Indian politician who assumed office as the second Chief Minister of Telangana on 7 December 2023, representing the Indian National Congress (INC). He joined the INC in 2017 after leaving the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Previously, he served as a Member of Parliament for the Malkajgiri constituency and as a two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly for Kodangal as a TDP candidate. As the President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), Revanth Reddy led his party to victory in the 2023 Telangana Legislative Assembly election, ending the 10-year rule of the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

Anumula Revanth Reddy was born on Saturday, 8 November 1969 (age 54 years; as of 2023) in Kondareddypalli, Nagarkurnool, Telangana. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. In 1992, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at A. V. College, Osmania University in Hyderabad, Telangana. Revanth Reddy became a member of ABVP when he was pursuing his college studies.

Career

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)

In 2001, Revanth Reddy joined Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) [formerly Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)] but left in 2006 when he was not given a ticket.

As an Independent Candidate

In 2006, Revanth Reddy contested the local body elections as an independent candidate and won as the Zilla Parishad Territorial Committee (ZPTC) member from the Midjil Mandal constituency. He then became a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) as an independent candidate in 2007.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP)

Later, Revanth Reddy met with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, and soon, Reddy joined the Telugu Desam Party as its member.

In 2009, Revanth Reddy became a member of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from the Kodangal constituency, representing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). He defeated the incumbent and five-time MLA Gurunath Reddy from Congress (INC) and secured 46.46% of the votes. He served as an MLA in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly from 2009 to 2014. In 2014, he was re-elected as an MLA in the Telangana Assembly from the Kodangal constituency, and he served the position till 2018. He won the 2014 election with a lead of 14,614 votes. Subsequently, he became the floor leader of the Telugu Desam Party in the Telangana Legislative Assembly. On 25 October 2017, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) removed him as the floor leader of the Telangana TDP, anticipating his move to the Indian National Congress.

Indian National Congress (INC)

He officially joined Congress on 31 October 2017. In the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections, Revanth Reddy contested from the Kodangal constituency but lost to TRS candidate Patnam Narender Reddy. He was appointed one of the three working presidents of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on 20 September 2018.

After losing in the 2018 Telangana legislative assembly election, Revanth Reddy won the 2019 general election from the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency. He became the president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee in June 2021. In 2023, Revanth Reddy led the Congress’ campaign in the Telangana Legislative Assembly election, winning 64 seats. He contested from Kodangal and won, and contested from Kamareddy but lost. On 5 December 2023, he was chosen as the designated Chief Minister of Telangana.

Controversies

Bribery Allegations

On 31 May 2015, he was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for bribing a nominated MLA named Elvis Stephenson. A criminal case was filed against him, Bishop Sebastian Harry, and Uday Simha. The Telangana High Court granted him conditional bail on 30 June 2015.

House Arrest

In July 2021, he was house arrest before a planned protest over corruption allegations. In December 2021, he was put under house arrest again when he planned to join a farmer protest.
