The strains in Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky’s marriage were on full display on Wednesday’s season 13 premiere The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
The episode ended with a low-key conversation between the pair, who appeared to reveal some of the challenges that led to their split, news that PEOPLE exclusively reported back in July.
“I mean, sometimes you’re married and they can’t do anything wrong. Other times, they’re breathing and you want to hit them,” Kyle, 54, explained in the confessional. “I’m irritated right now.”
Kyle walked into her conversation with Maurici already annoyed, admitting before he could talk to his assistant that she was frustrated. “As soon as you finish your golf schedule, let me know,” she told him sarcastically.
“I can’t do this all day,” she added to herself. “I hate everything, sorry!”

This anger ran through her entire communication with Mauricio. “Mo and I have had a challenging year together,” she told the crowd. “He worked non-stop. I worked. When you have to make an appointment to go over your schedule, you know it’s a problem.”
For his part, Mauricio, 53, seemed oblivious to the nature of Kyle’s frustrations during their conversation. He started by asking Kyle if he wanted to go on a family trip to Portugal, where he had to be on a business trip that happened to fall on their 15-year-old daughter Portia’s spring break.
“Sounds like you’re really booked up,” Kyle said, before dismissing Mauricio’s idea to turn his work getaway into a “fun” getaway. “I have things to do here, I don’t know if I’ll be able to go anywhere like that. I can’t go to Portugal. Not during that window, no.”

With their schedule off limits, Mauricio went into the effect Kyle’s newfound exercise regimen was having on her. On the other hand, you look amazing, he said. “I mean, you’re going to go exercise now. You look so good.”
“Thanks,” Kyle replied simply to his compliment.
“You’re working out like a beast right now,” Mauricio continued. “You eat well, you don’t drink. Like, you’re changing your life. You look amazing.”
“Oh, thanks,” Kyle repeated.

In the interview, Kyle revealed why she got into fitness, explaining that it was inspired not only by what she was going through with Mauricio, but also by the drama that broke out last season with her RHOBH costars and her sister Kathy Hilton.
“When you go through painful periods in your life, it changes you as a person,” she said. “My sister, I feel let down by my friends, I feel disconnected from my husband—you have to find an outlet. That makes me feel good. And I hope, I hope Mo does too, because here I am!”

Kyle’s newfound confidence inspired her to expand her tattoo collection, which she and Mauricio also discussed. When Mauricio asked her how many tattoos she now had, the mother of four proudly showed off her ink, telling her husband she had “five”.
“Seriously?” he asked, noting that he “forgot” about one and “only knew about three.”
“Well… maybe you should take a closer look at my body,” Kyle joked, telling the crowd, “This is obviously a big symptom of us not spending time together. Years ago, he would have noticed the freckles on my body. Now, he doesn’t know that I have two more tattoos!”

But Mauricio was not very happy about it. “I think that’s enough, okay?” he told her. “That’s enough. Five tattoos is a lot.”
“Mmm… I don’t know. I think I’ll take another,” Kyle told him. – If I want to, I will.
“I won’t allow it,” Mauricio said.
“You didn’t even know how many I had, so…if I want one, I’ll take it,” Kyle said. “It’s my body.”
“Love Bean, stop it,” Mauricio said. “You don’t need any more tattoos.”

But Kyle didn’t budge. “You don’t have a choice,” she told him firmly, dismissing another objection by repeating directly, “You don’t have a choice.”
“I’m at a point in my life where I don’t have to explain anything to anyone — including you,” she continued. “I went from doing whatever my mom wanted me to be a mom and I had to set a good example for my girls. And I just realized that you can do all of that and things can still go to—. I don’t know if what happened with my sister or whatever. But I just don’t feel like I have to answer to anybody.”
“Well you don’t, but don’t become a rebel and do it out of rebellion,” said Mauricio. “Do it because you want to.”
But according to Kyle, the rebellion had nothing to do with it. “Listen, I’m fucking clear now. I’m not protesting,” she told him. “I’m just being really clear.”
