Richard Dean Anderson is an American actor and television producer whose career began in the 1970s. In 1976, he began his acting career in the American soap opera General Hospital. He is best known for his role on the television series MacGyver, which aired from 1985 to 1992. Anderson was an executive producer on six of the shows on which he appeared.

Richard Dean Anderson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to parents Stuart Jay Anderson and Jocelyn Rhae Carter. His mother was a painter and his father a teacher. He is of Swedish, Mohawk, Scottish, Finnish and Norwegian descent and grew up in Roseville, Minnesota. He had a childhood dream of playing professional hockey, but that dream fell apart when he broke both his arms. Later he became interested in music, acting and art.
Alexander Ramsey High School was where he went to school. He attended St. Cloud State University to study acting after graduation. He later enrolled at Ohio University, but dropped out before graduating. He participated in a cross-country bike ride from Minnesota to Alaska while in college. Dean Anderson’s acting career began in the late 1970s, and in 1976 he appeared in the American soap opera General Hospital, which aired from 1976 to 1981. He had a starring role in the CBS television series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in 1982. In 1986 .appeared in the film Ordinary Heroes.
