News about Richard Holden
The government has gone further in recent years to capture the usual generosity of the British people. We have stopped our open borders policy with the EU and moved to a policy where we select immigrants for the UK based on a points based immigration system like Australia’s for economic migrants since we decided to leave the EU and take back the control of our borders.
In addition, because our policy is completely focused on helping genuine refugees, we have also provided specialized programs to target help to those who need it most around the world.
I am proud of the help we have provided, including more than 150,000 Ukrainians fleeing Putin’s illegal war and 100,000 people in Hong Kong facing persecution and draconian security laws. We also helped 20,000 Syrians who would otherwise have been captured by ISIS.
However, the increase in unauthorized migration via small boats crossing the English Channel is undermining public support for this type of migration. Since there were only about 300 crossings in 2018 out of more than 65,000 people forecast for this year, the problem was more acute. The disturbing fact is that two groups of people are trying to cross the Channel illegally.
The first group is made up of illegal economic immigrants, many of whom are from Albania. By attempting to cross the Channel, they avoid the line of legitimate migration routes through which thousands of people pass each year, including students from our institutions, chefs, and IT professionals from around the world.
The goal of the government’s new illegal immigration law is to quickly jail and deport people who try to circumvent the legal system so that we have a fair and functioning system. Those who cross the dangerous English Channel to claim asylum in the UK form another category. These people are trying to reach the UK from safe countries like France or Belgium.
It seems ludicrous to encourage these people to risk their lives when they can seek safe haven in any number of countries before reaching the Canal, given that we are now seeing deaths in the Canal as we saw on trucks before the route became more difficult. I don’t want to witness any more sad incidents of drowning in the icy waters of the Canal.
