Ridley Scott Says 'There's Already an Idea' for Gladiator III

Gladiator II is still two months away from hitting theaters, but director Ridley Scott already has his sights set on a third film.

Scott, 86, said The Hollywood Reporter that he would “rather catch himself Gladiator III,” when the label asked him about his next project after the sequel’s upcoming November 22nd release.

“There’s already an idea,” Scott said, noting that his concept is for a third Gladiator The film is inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 epic The Godfather Part II.

Scott, whose second is Gladiator the film comes 24 years after Russell Crowe helmed the franchise’s similarly titled first entry Godfather Part II while teasing the third film for a French release Premiere.

“So, next [film] it’s going to be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is,” Scott said Premiere concept.

Gladiator II stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, the nephew of Crowe’s character Maximus from the original film. (Spencer Treat Clark played the character as a child in the 2000 original.) Trailers for the upcoming historical action film show Lucius taking up fighting competitions as an adult. The film also stars Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen, the latter reprising her role as Lucius’ mother Lucilla.

“Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius is forced into the Colosseum after his home has been conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome with an iron hand,” the film’s official synopsis reads. “With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look back to his past to find the strength and honor to restore the glory of Rome to its people.”

Mescal, 28, said Premiere that Scott had only recently informed him of his desire to make a third Gladiator movie. Although he said he was interested, he noted, “we can’t rush anything.”

Scott himself recently gave PEOPLE a glimpse of what audiences can expect Gladiator II on Alien: Romuluspremiere on August 12.

“It’s as good as the first one,” he said. Original Gladiator won five Academy Awards at the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001 and received a total of 12 nominations at that year’s ceremony. “I didn’t say better. It’s just as well.”
