Rihanna Performs Two of Her Own Songs at Karaoke — and the Internet Has Thoughts

Rihanna closes 2024 in a simple way — with a night of karaoke.

According to videos shared by fans online, the “Diamonds” singer hit the New York City Girls Love Karaoke event on Saturday, December 28 to sing her 2016 tracks “Needed Me” and “Sex With Me” from her latest album Anti. She told fans that she only had five minutes and that her “battery” was about to die, but she found time to entertain the visitors.

Fans enjoyed Rihanna (36) coming out to sing her own songs at the karaoke night. “Awe what fun she’s having,” one person wrote of her delight. “Imagine going [karaoke] night and get a free Rihanna performance,” another said of the event.

Although some fans criticized her vocals, others defended her impromptu performance. “Say what you will about Rihanna’s drunk karaoke, but she will always be THAT GIRL,” the fan said. “MIC is always ON and that TONE is unmatched. 😘.”

“that Rihanna karaoke video? I can’t really hate her because that’s what I sound like when I’m drunk and out having fun with my friends 😭,” another chimed in.

Rihanna, who released her last full-length album in 2016, told British Vogue 2023 about the “toxic pressure” she puts on herself in order to create music that will be top-notch Antiwhich he calls “the most cohesive album I’ve ever made”.

“That’s not the right way to look at music because music is an outlet and a space to create, and you can create whatever you want. It doesn’t have to be on any scale,” she said at the time. “It just has to be something that’s good. It can just be a song that I like. It literally could be that simple.”

Although it’s been almost a decade since she released an album, the beauty contributed two original songs — “Lift Me Up” and “Born Again” — Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack in 2022.

She previously teased new music in April, telling Entertainment Tonight that her highly anticipated tracks are “so good.”
