It was a glittering night celebrating the best of the small screen, but for one show a dark shadow hung over the National Television Awards.
The cast of EastEnders arrived at Wednesday’s ceremony after being tormented by a stalker, they can reveal.

A ring of steel was thrown around stars including Jessie Wallace, Adam Woodyatt and Jacqueline Joss as they attended the annual events amid concerns for their safety.
Extra security was brought in and pictures of the suspect were shared in heightened detail to keep the soap stars safe.
An NTA source said: “So many A-listers in one place meant the O2 was already incredibly well guarded, but the threat to the EastEnders cast meant extra measures were put in place.
“A picture of the suspected stalker has been sent to staff so they know who to contact.”
The stalker, who was believed to be an over-the-top fan, had been spamming the stars of the BBC One soap online letting them know they had a ticket to the event and were hoping to meet their idols.
We’re not revealing any more details about the encounters, but there was enough to worry the Albert Square favourites.
They were also sheltered for a cast drink at the nearby Enderby House pub, where they gathered before arriving en masse for the ceremony.
‘Draw the line’
My insider said: “The cast of EastEnders tread the line between being instantly household names and living fairly normal lives.
“They take the subway and train to work, shop at their own supermarket and can mostly go about their business with only the odd fan encounter or selfie request. But bosses have to draw the line somewhere and when a stalker made it clear she planned to attend the event, something had to be done.”

Spectators can purchase tickets to attend the NTA red carpet, which means careful safeguards are already in place.

As soon as they could, the duo ditched the glamor and went home to get the Chinese, sharing a piece of their noodles in bed with their dog Pip.

Hannah said: “It was a complete no-brainer to present it to Davina. This woman is a pioneer and we have all followed her journey.
“She should have won Best Host 15 million times.”
A surprised and delighted Davina said: “It meant a lot to me to receive this award from Hannah. We corresponded yesterday and she didn’t say anything. Isn’t that crazy?
“It means the world to me.”

One partygoer said: “Ekin and Joe were inseparable all night, talking and dancing together.”
Ekin-Su and Joe have been friends for years after hosting a podcast together.
She could have done a lot worse – Joe is a top guy.
