Rita Bahuguna Joshi is an Indian politician and educationist. She served as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Uttar Pradesh. She served as the chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 2007 to 2012. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna is her father. She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on October 20, 2016. In 2019, she represented the PPP in the general election in the Allahabad constituency and won.

In 2004, she was appointed as a member of the Beijing +10 Drafting Committee. She served as mayor of Allahabad constituency from 1995 to 2000. She started serving as the President of All India Mahila Congress in 2003. She is a former Vice-President of the National Council for Women. In 2007, she was appointed president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. In 2012, she contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Lucknow constituency but failed. Detained for hate speech against Mayawati
On July 16, 2009, she was sent to judicial custody in Moradabad jail for 14 days. She was detained for making derogatory remarks about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. In a speech, Rita pointed to Mayawati and said that Mayawati was responsible for the failed policing system in Uttar Pradesh and the rising number of rape cases in the state. On May 11, 2011, Rita, Rahul Gandhi and Digvijay Singh were arrested by the Meerut police while participating in a local farmers’ agitation rally in Bhatta Parsol village in western Uttar Pradesh.
Violation of model code of conduct
On October 21, 2022, an arrest warrant was issued against Rita Bahuguna Joshi for violating the Model Code of Conduct during the 2012 Assembly elections. In 2012, she was associated with the Indian National Congress. She was found guilty of campaigning after the 2012 parliamentary elections. Static Magistrate Mukesh Chaturvedi registered a case against her on February 17, 2012 at Krishna Nagar police station. Election investigation officer Ramsahai Dwivedi filed charges against her in March 2012. She was sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Lucknow court on February 2, 2024. - On October 20, 2020, Rita Bahuguna Joshi was awarded the United Nations Award of Excellence for being the “most outstanding female mayor in South Asia”. In June 2001, she received the same honor at the 2001 Phitsanulok, Thailand.

However, the BJP denied Mayank Joshi’s candidacy ahead of the final phase of the Uttar Pradesh elections and in March 2022, he became a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP). The BJP did not consider Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s surrender plea under the BJP’s “one household, one vote” rule.
