Ron Rivera (Ronald Eugene “Ron” Rivera) is an American football coach and former player who currently serves as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers (NFL) of the National Football League. He also served as the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers.

He also played college football at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was named an All-American linebacker. He was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft and was a backup on the 1985 team that won Super Bowl XX.
Rivera was the defensive coordinator for the Bears in 2006 when they won the NFC and competed in Super Bowl XLI. He was named the head coach of the Panthers in 2011. Rivera was named NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press in 2013 and 2015. He has led the Panthers to three straight league titles and an appearance in Super Bowl 50 since taking over as head coach.

Ron Rivera received a football scholarship to the University of California, where he was a consensus All-American linebacker, leading the Golden Bears in offense for three years. He once held the all-time record for career sacks and catches for Cal, and still holds the record for catches for loss in a season, which he set in 1983. Rivera was named MVP of the East-West Shrine Game in 1984. Ron Rivera’s house in Charlotte, North Carolina caught fire on January 5, 2015. Professional life
Rivera was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He appeared in Super Bowl XX in 1985, when the Bears defeated the New England Patriots 46-10. Rivera was the first Mexican/Puerto Rican player to play on a team that won a Super Bowl. He became a starter in 1988 and stayed there for three seasons. Rivera was a member of the Bears for nine seasons (1984–1992).

Rivera began working as a TV analyst for WGN-TV and SportsChannel Chicago in 1993, covering the Bears and college football. He joined the Bears as the defensive quality control coach in 1996.
