Kensington Palace announced the dramatic news at 2pm yesterday, but royal sources were quick to say it was in no way linked to cancer.
Less than 90 minutes later, in another royal shock, Buckingham Palace announced that the king would need surgery for an enlarged prostate.
William and Kate are understood to have been in contact with Charles and Queen Camilla.
Kate was taken to the clinic for a scheduled surgical appointment on Tuesday and did not go by ambulance, sources said.
The Waleses’ three children George, 10, Charlotte, eight, and Louis, five, were at Lambrook School in Berkshire yesterday as the family keep things as normal as possible.
The future King William used to go to school between trips to see his wife.
He is believed to have left hospital before the Palace announcement yesterday afternoon.
Officials did not disclose the nature of the surgery due to Kate’s “medical privacy.” But the source said she is fine.
William is expected to be a regular visitor, traveling 25 miles from their home, Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, Berks.
Kate is expected to remain under the care of doctors and medical professionals for at least ten days.
The palace advised that her stay in hospital could last as long as two weeks. She will then be discharged to rest at home.
She will not be well enough to return to royal engagements before Easter, meaning she will be out of work for up to 11 weeks to recover. It is believed that it could appear in public only in April.
This forced Kate and William to postpone top secret plans to visit British soldiers stationed abroad.
An official visit to Italy in February has been canceled and William will not be traveling alone.
Kate’s big projects launched last year, including her Shaping Us initiative for under-fives, will be on the back burner while she recovers.
Wills will also cut back on his public engagements to take on more parenting duties.
He and Kate were expected to feature heavily at events marking Mental Health Awareness Week next month.
The couple, who moved from Kensington Palace to Windsor Estate 18 months ago, do not have a live-in nanny.
A statement from Kensington Palace said: “Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was admitted to a London clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery.
“The operation was a success and he is expected to remain in hospital for ten to 14 days, before returning home to continue his recovery.
“Based on current medical advice, he is unlikely to return to public duties before Easter.
“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normalcy as possible for her children; and her desire to keep her personal medical information private.

Dramatic news about Kate’s health was announced by Kensington Palace at 2 p.m
“Kensington Palace will therefore only provide an update on Her Royal Highness’s progress when there is significant new information to share.
“The Princess of Wales would like to apologize to anyone who is concerned about the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements.
“He’s looking forward to getting back as much as possible, as soon as possible.”
Planned abdominal surgery can involve any of the vital or reproductive organs such as the stomach, intestines, or uterus.
Sun GP Dr Zoe Williams said: “This could be something that has been bothering her all her life and she hasn’t had time to deal with or a problem that has come to light recently.
“Two weeks in the hospital is longer than we would normally expect, but she does not have a normal life.
“She is a future queen so the doctors will err on the side of caution.
“We all hope it’s something minor and that the operation is simple, but caution is wise.
“With anything medical you can’t be absolutely sure how things are going to turn out.
“The most important thing is that she has enough time to recover and that it’s not too stressful for her and her family.”
Kate was last seen in public on Christmas Day as she, William and their children walked to St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham.
She seemed relaxed and smiling as she chatted with the celebrants.
If Kate recovers on schedule, then her first engagement could be at a family service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on Easter Sunday, March 31.
But the doctor’s advice is that he will probably recover by April.
In 2012, Kate spent several days in hospital with morning sickness while she was 12 weeks pregnant with George.

PRINCESS Kate can expect the best treatment as she recovers at The London Clinic — Britain’s largest private hospital.
The 92-year-old facility is located in the heart of Harley Street, the capital’s famous medical district near Regent’s Park.
Past patients include Prince Philip, who had abdominal surgery there in 2013.
Prime Ministers Anthony Eden and Clement Attlee, US President John F Kennedy and actress Elizabeth Taylor were also treated at the clinic.
Housekeepers maintain its individual rooms, and patients have received a standard of luxury hotel service since the kitchens opened in 1935.
The chefs prepare meals using meat and fish from local markets and artisan bakeries.
Patients can book tours, theater shows and restaurants through their concierge service to make the most of their time in London, he suggests.
Each year, 120,000 people are treated by what it calls “experts with world-class resources dedicated to maintaining the highest standards.”
It has state-of-the-art surgical robots, Europe’s largest stem cell unit and staff specialized in complex conditions. Polls showed that 99 percent of patients would recommend it.
The late Queen, King Charles, Queen Camilla and Princess Margaret officially opened wings and units at the clinic, which was rated “good” overall by the Care Quality Commission watchdog in 2021. However, the surgery department was said to “require improvement”.
