Run-DMC’s Rev Run Says He Still Rocks Adidas — But With ‘Loosely Fitting’ Laces Because He’s ’59’ (Exclusive)

And then Run-DMC had a distinctive sneaker look: no laces. Now, Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels agree that their Adidas will never go out of style — but laces are essential.

“I’m wearing Adidas right now. They’re a loose fit, but they have laces,” Rev Run tells PEOPLE. – I am 59 years old.

He adds: “Right now I’m wearing a full Adidas suit and a pair of Adidas trainers. They’re not tied tight now, but I need these laces.”

Thursday marked the premiere of their Peacock documentaries Kings of Queens: The Run DMC Story. In the second episode, they discuss how their hit song “My Adidas” took the trio, which included the late Jam Master Jay, to new heights in the worlds of music and fashion.

DMC, 59, tells PEOPLE that Adidas is “all I can wear” and recalls how “happy” he was when he got his first pair. When Run-DMC signed with the brand — he realized their relationship was more than just a sneaker. It was about bringing people together.

“That’s what these sneakers mean. They represent positivity, creativity, something good. There are no divisions – they bring white, black, Puerto Rican, they combine rock and hip hop,” he says. “There are so many important values ​​that Run-DMC carries and these sneakers carry, people want to be a part of them.”

“When you put on those sneakers, it’s not about the product itself,” he continues. “It’s about the person with those sneakers, hip-hop gave us the confidence to be enthusiastic about who you are.”

Run-DMC released “My Adidas” in 1986. In the documentary, Russell Simmons, record executive and Rev Run’s older brother, revealed that he wrote the lyrics when he was drenched in “angel dust.”

“I just had a wet bag of angel dust,” Simmons recalled in the document. “You’re like, ‘We’ve got to do something with those sneakers.’ And I gave them some lines.”
