Rustom Sorabji “Rusi” Cooper was a notable Indian first-class cricketer and lawyer. He attended Elphinstone High School and St Xavier’s High School in Bombay. Cooper began his cricket career as a right-handed batsman and made his first-class debut in the 1941-42 Bombay Pentangular Tournament, playing for the Parsees. He later represented Bombay in the Ranji Trophy during the 1943-44 and 1944-45 seasons.
In February 1944, Cooper earned a place in the Rest of India team and scored his maiden first-class century while batting at number eight. He had an impressive season, finishing with 383 runs at an average of 76.60. The following season, he improved further, scoring 551 runs at an average of 91.83, including two centuries, one of them in the Ranji Trophy final, which contributed to Bombay winning the title.
In 1946, Cooper moved to England to study at the London School of Economics. He was signed by Middlesex and played in the 1949 County Championship, but struggled to make an impact, averaging only 19.63. Later, he became a prominent batsman for Hornsey Cricket Club, achieving great success, including scoring 1,117 runs in 19 innings during the 1953 season at an impressive average of 139.62.
