Author Ruth Ware still remembers the moment she found out Reese Witherspoon was a fan of her work. On Oct. 29, the bestselling thriller writer answered questions submitted by members of the online literary community BookThreads during an Ask Me Anything session on Threads. When asked about the opportunity that changed her life, Ware said it had to do with finding a fan in a famous book lover. “I guess the answer for me is — writing my books!” Ware wrote. “I never expected them to take off the way they did – and I still remember…my agent calling and saying ‘Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood In a dark dark forest‘ and almost dropped the phone. The decision to write that book literally changed my life!” In 2018 Deadline reported that Witherspoon and producer Bruno Papandrea are further developing a film adaptation In a dark dark forestafter bringing writer Arash Amel on the project. Witherspoon also selected Ware’s novel, The lying gameas a 2017 selection for her book club, Reese’s Book Club.

Ware also said during the AMAs that the book, which Threads chose for the October book club, was partially inspired by a conversation she had with author Gillian McAllister. “We talked about Traitors TV shows and reality TV in general, and I said it’s a miracle more of those shows don’t end in murder,” Ware wrote. “[McAllister] said ‘Sounds like a Ruth Ware novel’ and the idea for OPC was born.”
