SAG-AFTRA Offers Members Tips on Halloween Costumes amid Ongoing Strike

SAG-AFTRA is making sure its members continue to show solidarity during Halloween amid the ongoing strike, which means stars are unlikely to dress up as Barbie, Wednesday Addams and other popular characters.

With the holiday fast approaching, the union recently released a set of guidelines for members to follow when selecting costumes.

“This Halloween, we wanted to make sure our members don’t unintentionally break strike rules and have put together some quick tips on the dos and don’ts of costumes,” explained a post on the union’s website. “Check them out and have a spooky Halloween!”

A graphic included with the post advises its members to “choose costumes inspired by general characters and figures (ghost, zombie, spider, etc.).”

The union — made up of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists — offered further guidance on what costumes would be acceptable, advising its members to “dress up as characters from unaffected content, such as an animated series.”

The graphic also encouraged members not to share photos of costumes that may have been inspired by the offending content on social media.

As for the rationale for the guidelines, the union wrote: “Let’s use our collective power to send a loud and clear message to our affected employers that we will not promote their content without a fair contract.”

SAG-AFTRA represents “approximately 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers, news editors, program hosts, puppeteers, cameramen, singers, stuntmen, voice-over artists and other media professionals,” according to the website page.

Ryan Reynolds was among the first to speak about the advisory notice post on X, formally known as Twitter. “Looking forward to yelling ‘mange’ at my 8-year-old all night. She’s not in the union, but she needs to learn,” Reynolds wrote.

The announcement comes days after SAG-AFTRA announced that recent contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) had failed.

“It is with deep disappointment that we announce that the industry’s chief executives have left the negotiating table after refusing to stand up to our latest offer,” they said in a statement. “We negotiated with them in good faith, despite the fact that last week they put forward an offer that, shockingly, was less than what they were offering before the strike.”

AMPTP confirmed that a resolution had not been reached by issuing a news release summarizing the items they claimed to have offered SAG-AFTRA during recent meetings. They ended their post by writing that they hope SAG-AFTRA will “reconsider and return to production negotiations soon.”
