The Houston Rockets selected Cassell as the 24th overall pick in the 1993 NBA draft. When he arrived, he had to struggle and struggle to get playing time on a 55-win team with a loaded backcourt and future Hall of Famers like Hakeem Olajuwon. Under the direction of George Karl, he created the “Big 3” along with Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson. Against “Bikov” on March 3, 2001, he scored 40.
He was signed by the LA Clippers. It was his first postseason since 1997. On March 3, 2008, he signed a contract with the Boston Celtics as a free agent. He helped the “Celtics” boast the best veteran bench in the NBA.
Cassell began working for the Washington Wizards on May 21, 2009 under Flip Saunders. John Wall, the first pick of the Wizards in the 2010 draft, credited Cassell with leading the team to the 2014 Eastern Conference semifinals and first postseason series win since 2005. Cassell was signed by the Clippers on September 29, 2014 after five seasons with the Wizards. The 76ers hired Cassell as an assistant coach on November 9, 2020.
