Sandeep Lamichane is a Nepalese cricketer. He is one of the first 11 players in the Nepal national cricket team. He is the first Nepali player to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sandeep was born on August 2, 2000, in Syangja, Nepal (22 years old as of 2022). As a child, he moved to the Chitwan region and started training at the Chitwan Cricket Academy run by former Nepal captain Raju Khadka. Under the tutelage of Pubudu Dassanayake and Raju Khadka, he honed his skills and was selected for the national under-19 camp.

Sandeep’s father, Chander Narayan Lamichane, served in the Indian Railways. His mother’s name is unknown.
He has a brother Mohan Lamichane (Elder) and a sister Indu Lamichane Neupane.

On 16 April 2016, he made his Group A debut against Namibia in the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship. He subsequently represented Nepal in the 2016 U-19 Cricket World Cup and scored a hat-trick in the second match against Ireland. He was the second highest wicket-taker in the Under-19 World Cup. In September 2016, former Australia captain Michael Clark was impressed by his game and invited him to play at Sydney’s Western Suburbs Cricket Club.
In January 2018, Sandeep was selected in Nepal’s squad for the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Level 2 tournament. In the first match against Namibia, he was awarded the Man of the Match for his excellent bowling performance of 4/18 in 8.2 overs. After a string of outstanding performances, he was named Player of the Tournament. In May 2018, he made his T20 debut after being selected in the ICC Rest of the World XI for the Hurricanes Relief T20 Challenge against West Indies at Lord’s. He made his ODI debut on August 1, 2018 against the Netherlands. During the 2018-19 ICC World Twenty20 Asian Qualifiers, he became the leading wicket-taker with 24 dismissals in 6 matches.
Domestic
In 2018, he was acquired by IPL team Delhi Daredevils for Rs 20 lakh. He is the first Nepali player to play in IPL. Regarding his selection in the IPL, then Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the relationship between Nepal and India had been strengthened because of the signing.
In March 2018, he was selected by the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). In October 2018, he was signed by the Melbourne Stars to participate in the Big Bash League (BBL), becoming the first Nepali player to participate in a BBL game. Later that month, he was drafted into the Bangladesh Premier League and played for Sylhet Sixers. In November 2018, Sandeep was also selected for the Lahore Qalandars team of the Pakistan Super League.

In September 2022, a 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint against the cricketer with the Gaushala Metropolitan Police Station after she accused him of sexual harassment. She stated in her complaint that as a fan of the cricketer, she started interacting with him through WhatsApp and Snapchat and on August 21, 2022, he sexually harassed her. Later, Interpol issued a proliferation notice against the cricketer, who has been on the run since the girl lodged a complaint against him. After a proliferation notice was issued against him, Ramichan took to Facebook to prove his innocence. He said,
All the accusations against me took a toll on me mentally. I was under a lot of mental stress, not in good health, and was in constant isolation. I have been following the doctor’s advice,” Ramichan said. “I will return to Nepal as soon as possible. ”
Lamichane was arrested in October 2022; however, he was later released after paying a bail of Rs. 2 million under certain conditions. On December 29, 2023, the Kathmandu District Court found him guilty of rape. On January 10, 2024, a Nepalese court sentenced him to 8 years in prison and fined him 1 million yuan. 3,00,000 fine on him. Additionally, the court directed him to pay compensation of Rs. 2,00,000 to the victim.
