Saoirse Ronan tells it like it is.
On Friday, October 25, the actress, 30, appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne and Denzel Washington, where she offered her perspective on violence against women after a joke about self-defense.
Redmayne (42) spoke on the talk show about the physical training he went through for his role in the upcoming miniseries Day of the Jackalin which he plays a murderer.
After he said he was taught how to use his phone as a weapon if someone attacked him, Mescal, 28, and host Graham Norton began joking that they wouldn’t think of using their phone as a weapon if they were in danger.

“Who’s really going to think about that?” Mescal said, mimicking taking his phone out of his pants pocket. “If someone really attacked me, I will not go on the ‘phone.’ ”
Norton, 61, then pointed at the would-be attacker and said: “Can you wait a second?” as he pretended to remove his phone from his.

“That’s a very good point,” Redmayne added, before Ronan chimed in, saying: “That’s something girls have to think about all the time.”

The Little Women The star then pointed to the audience and asked: “Am I right ladies?” which received a strong applause.
Representatives for Mescal and Redmayne did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. A representative for Norton declined to comment.
People on social media have since praised Ronan for her comment, which went viral, saying she “shut up” the men on the talk show.

Ronan is currently preparing for the release of his upcoming film Blitz. In it, she plays a single mother named Rita who lives in London in the middle of World War II with her 9-year-old son George.
According to the synopsis, the boy “embarks on an adventure, only to find himself in grave danger as a distraught Rita searches for her missing son.”

The actress revealed in a recent interview for Vogue that she was attracted to the film by director Steven McQueen, who directed it 12 years of slavery.
“I’ve been telling my agent for years, if someone like Steve McQueen asks me to meet him or audition for him, make it happen,” she told the news outlet.
At the time, however, Ronan was hesitant to make “another war movie.”
