Saoirse Ronan Reveals She Auditioned for Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter: 'I Knew I Wasn't Gonna Get It'

Saoirse Ronan was almost enrolled in Hogwarts.

While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! On Thursday, Oct. 3, the four-time Oscar nominee, 30, was asked if there were any past roles she regrets not being able to play.

“There are things you’ll pass on and then they come out and you’re like, ‘Oh, God, that was a misstep on my part,'” Ronan said.

“But I think what stuck with me over the years was — I didn’t say no to him, I just didn’t get the part. I lost again; that’s an ongoing theme for me.”

“But I climbed for Luna Lovegood Harry Potter years,” said Ronan, who has two films coming out: The Outrun and Blitz. “Because it was like an Irish character, so they included all the Irish, like half of Ireland came to audition.”

Ronan recalled that she “knew I wouldn’t get it because I was too young, but I had to read the scene that was going to be in Harry Potterand it was the coolest thing ever.”

The character of Luna Lovegood is introduced Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenixwhich debuted in theaters in 2007 starring then-newcomer Evanna Lynch. That was the same year as Ronan’s movie Reconciliation came out, earning her her first Oscar nomination at age 13.

Ronan did act in some though Harry Potter– adapted adaptations of books for young people for adults, e.g City of Ember, Nice bones and Stephenie Meyer Host.

HBO’s reboot series of adaptations Harry Potter franchise is currently casting, putting out an open call for children between the ages of 9 and 11 and residents of the UK or Ireland for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint played them in the movies.)

The casting call added, “We are committed to an inclusive, diverse cast. For each role, we ask that you submit qualified performers, regardless of ethnicity, gender, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law, unless otherwise noted.”
