Sarah Michelle Gellar Celebrates Husband Freddie Prinze Jr. on Thanksgiving

Sarah Michelle Gellar has a lot to be thankful for, and this year it was especially husband Freddie Prinze Jr. – and his cooking!

On Friday morning, the actress shared a post of the longtime love in their Thanksgiving best, writing alongside the photo, “Grateful for this guy (and his Thanksgiving dinner).”

The 46-year-old actress also posted a glimpse of their spread on her Instagram Story, showing off a picture-perfect cake board set to the tune of Taylor Swift’s “… Ready for It”?

Gellar and Prinze Jr., 47, met on the set of the movie in 1997 I know what you did last summer and married five years later. In the years that followed, they welcomed children Charlotte and Rocky, now 14 and 11, and celebrated many holidays together.

Prinze Jr. talked to PEOPLE in 2019 about the family’s Thanksgiving tradition, saying they’ve been hosting what he calls “Thanksgiving for the underdogs” for 20-plus years.

“It goes back to when we were all young, hungry actors, the ones who couldn’t afford to go home or didn’t want to go home,” Prinze said while working on the Butterball Turkey Talk Line in Naperville, Illinois. “We had everything from just my family to almost 30 people where we cooked multiple turkeys in multiple ovens. I have a passion for that and that philosophy.”

The actor’s favorite memory of the day dates back nearly two decades, when he and Gellar had just moved into a home in Toluca Lake, California.

“There was literally no furniture, so we just filled it with tables,” he recalled. “We had maybe 28 people and we cooked anything you could think of. I had a ton of help — we cooked more turkeys, more side dishes. I was up super late the night before getting ready. But the moment we sat down, my memory erased all the work, all the stress.”

That’s not to say that more recent Thanksgivings with kids aren’t just as popular.

“My daughter is very involved in the process,” he said. “Every year, make a contribution, at least one. My son just eats. It works! But she really has a joy about it, a love for it, and she’s always asking — even if I don’t want her help, she helps.”

The one thing Prinze – who prepares almost all the family meals, he added – won’t touch is dessert.

“Sarah and I are like that night and day, and that’s why we’ve always been a good couple and had a good relationship, because everything I’m not into she’s really good at, and everything she’s not really into I’m really good at,” he explained. “It’s never a hassle to cook dinner because I like it.”

“But I worked at a place called Hometown Buffet in high school to help my family pay the bills, I worked the late night shift making desserts, and because of that I just can’t stand making desserts,” he continued. “So, I cook and she makes sweets.”
