Sarah Paulson Says Holland Taylor Has the 'Best Style' Thanks to Clothing She's Kept 'Since the Dawn of Time' (Exclusive)

Holland Taylor has been building her wardrobe for decades — and, according to her longtime partner Sarah Paulson, it’s paid off.

While speaking with PEOPLE at a celebration of J.Crew’s catalog and fall campaign during New York Fashion Week, Paulson, 49, said her girlfriend of nine years “has the best style of anyone on the planet.”

“What Holland wears any garment [is] she just makes it look like it costs so much money,” she told PEOPLE at the star-studded Sept. 5 event held at the New York Public Library.

Paulson added, “It’s just her way of moving through the world.”

Backing up her point, the Tony winner told PEOPLE that if the pair were to wear the same pair of sweatpants, Taylor, 81, would look like she bought them at “the fanciest store in town,” while she would (in her exact words) look “like a sack for trash”.

Elaborating on Taylor’s style strengths, Paulson explained that her longtime love “has a very beautiful way of dressing in monochrome” — not to mention a closet full of grail pieces she’s collected over the years.

“Holland has the clothes she’s had since the dawn of time,” Paulson said with a laugh. “And she really won’t get rid of them, and that’s because they look great on her. They still fit her.”

“She’s the perfect example: she knows what works for her, she sticks to it and she just always looks so great,” she added.

Paulson has an extra layer of appreciation for Taylor’s timeless personal style because achieving that kind of authenticity and cohesion with her own wardrobe was, to put it simply, a challenge.

“I would look in my closet for a long time and it would look kind of chaotic, in different versions,” the actress told PEOPLE, recalling how she would peek in and think, “I don’t know who this person is in this closet.”

“And on one level, what I felt was good for me about my closet was that I could go in there and be whoever I wanted to be,” she said. “But now I’m looking more for a little more simplicity and clarity, so I have a lot of the same stuff.”

But, Paulson added, those repetitive pieces “are becoming more and more like me and not the other people I want to be today.”
