Sarah Silverman Gushes as Shoshana Bean Cast in Her Musical, The Bedwetter: 'I'm Pinching Myself' (Exclusive)

Two-time Tony Award nominee and Broadway veteran Shoshana Bean starred in the Arena Stage production Sarah Silverman’s The Bedwetter — a new musical. And Silverman couldn’t be more thrilled.

“I’m pinching myself,” the comedian. 54. says about news, which PEOPLE can exclusively reveal. “Shoshana Bean is an amazing performer and I’m so proud of her choice Bedwetter for her next project.”

The musical that Silverman adapted from her 2010 memoir The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption and the Piss — follows 10-year-old Sarah “as she deals with a new school, her parents’ divorce, and an embarrassing secret you’ll never guess (unless you read the title).”

Bean, who last starred in Hell’s kitchen as a character modeled after Alicia Keys’ mother, will once again play a mother: this time, Sara’s mother, Beth Ann.

“This project and this team grabbed my heart in a very special and unique way,” shares Bean. 47. “I’m so excited to be in the room with them and honored to be a part of telling this equally heartbreaking and hilarious story.”

But for Silverman, Bean’s choice is personal. The two-time Emmy winner recalled seeing Bean during its Broadway run Wicked back in 2005. “Everyone has a special connection with their first Elphaba, and Shoshana was mine,” Silverman gushes. “We bedwetters love brilliant performers who are wonderful people, and we got both in spades with Shoshana.”

Hells Kitchen Broadway production

Sarah Silverman’s The Bedwetter — a new musical will begin performances on February 4, 2025 at the Kreeger Theater on the Arena Stage in Washington, DC. The production is currently scheduled to run until March 16.

Tony-nominated Anne Kauffman (Mary Jane) will lead the production again. She directed the play when it had its world premiere off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2022.

“Shoshana’s prismatic interpretation of Beth Ann Silverman is absolutely stunning,” enthuses Kauffman. “I can’t wait for the DC audience to witness her perform! Her wit, vulnerability and sharpness are astounding. And then to hear him sing… is nothing short of sublime.”

Music for Bedwetter composed by the late Adam Schlesinger, who also collaborated with Silverman on the lyrics. The Fountains of Wayne musician passed away in April 2020 after testing positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). He was 25 years old.

Additional music and lyrics were written by David Yazbek. The Tony winner is also a Broadway consultant Buena Vista Social Club.

Joshua Harmon (Significant other) wrote the book of the musical together with Silverman.

Additional casting choices will be announced in January.
