He was born on the 10th of July 1915 in Lachine, Montreal, Canada and he died at the age of 89. He was born Solomon Bellows, 2 years after his parents, Lescha Bellow and Abraham Bellows, moved from Saint Petersburg, Russia.

He had 3 older siblings – sister Zelda and brothers Moishe and Samuel. Saul’s family was Lithuanian-Jewish and his father was born in Vilnius. Saul learned to speak English as well as Yiddish, Hebrew, and French. His family moved to Chicago, Illinois when he was 9 years old.

He died on 5 April 2005 in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States, at the age of 89. He died of natural causes at the age of 89.

For his literary work, Saul has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Medal of Arts. Saul is the only author to have won the National Book Award for fiction 3 times and has received the National Book Foundation’s, Lifetime Medal. He received this medal in 1990 for his distinguished contribution to American letters.
