Savannah Chrisley Reveals Dad Todd Chrisley Is Teaching Financial Classes in Prison to Reduce Sentence: ‘How Ironic’

Savannah Chrisley finds it ironic that Todd Chrisley is teaching finance classes to reduce his prison sentence.

During the episode Unlocked with Savannah Chrisley podcast, the 26-year-old eponymous host revealed that her parents Todd and Julie Chrisley — who are currently serving time in prison for bank and wire fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy charges — have been taking classes to reduce their time in prison through First Step.

According to Chrisley knows best alum, First Step was established to help inmates reintegrate into society after serving their sentences by attending and teaching courses at the prison.

“Dad was definitely teaching,” Savannah said as she talked about how her parents took classes and also started tutoring them to earn more credits. “Trauma is one of them. I think another one was the financial class, which is ironic?”

She added: “I know [Julie] she definitely taught classes, like she taught a real estate class, she has all these certificates from lectures and completion of classes and all that stuff. Julie…always was.”

In September, PEOPLE confirmed that Todd, 54, and Julie, 50, had already received reduced sentences.

On the other hand, Julie’s seven-year sentence was shortened by 14 months. She will now be released from Lexington Federal Medical Center on October 19, 2028.

In August 2019, the couple was indicted on 12 counts of wire and wire fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy, all of which they denied. The couple was acquitted of state tax evasion charges in Georgia in October 2019, but still face federal charges for allegedly evading federal taxes.

Shortly after the news of the reduced sentence, Chrisley’s attorney, Jay Surgent, told PEOPLE that he hopes the couple’s sentencing time will be reduced even further.

“They were able to get some time off for both of them,” Surgent said, adding that the upcoming legal action on Nov. 1 could cut into even more time off. “There will be the adoption of Federal guidelines for determining sentences, changes, modifications, recommendations for reducing sentences for non-violent offenders. So [I] i don’t know at this point, but they should get two points apiece for that. So that will further reduce their fines.”
