Saweetie had the last laugh!
The “My Type” rapper, 30, went viral Tuesday after she took over hosting duties during the 2023 MTV VMAs red carpet pre-show — and had a few mishaps while trying to read from an apparent teleprompter.
During the now-circulating clip, she and co-host Dometi Pongo began the pre-show, while he asked Saweetie how he was doing. After a brief exchange with Pong, Saweetie stared at the camera wordlessly for a few seconds, when her co-host looked at her to continue.

“Oh, I’m so excited about tonight too and I can’t wait to see the fashion on some of my friends,” she said in response. The clip has earned more than 30,000 likes on Xu, formerly Twitter, as of Tuesday night.
In another clip making its way around social media, Saweetie also slipped her words but smiled and brushed it off like a pro.

She wasn’t about to let a small mistake stop her, though. When it was finally her time to speak again – this time introducing Stray Kids’ performance during the main show – Saweetie came prepared.
“Hey, what’s up, everyone. It’s me again, and you better stop making my stuttering video go viral, I see what you’re doing,” she said. “Anyway, let’s try again.” The second time, her presentation went flawlessly.

On top of Saweetie’s viral moment and comeback, the 2023 VMAs were a big night for women in rap. The event featured performances by Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B, and even Nicki Minaj, among others.
For Nicki’s performance, the queen of rap prepared two songs: her latest single “Last Time I Saw You” and an unreleased cut from her upcoming, long-awaited LP Pink Friday 2. “MTV, it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t say hi Pink Friday 2 exclusive,” Minaj announced before jumping into the new track.
Minaj is also expected to return for another performance with some other rap heavyweights in honor of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. Other performers on Tuesday included Anitta, Demi Lovato, Karol G, Olivia Rodrigo, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Shakira.
The 2023 MTV VMAs air live from The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday, September 12 on CBS and BET, BET Her, VH1, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV , MTV2, Nickelodeon and Paramount Network. Viewers can also watch the show via the MTV.com live stream or on Paramount+.
