Scarlett Johansson Pokes Fun at Her Oscar Losses in M&M’s Super Bowl Commercial About ‘Almost Champions’

Scarlett Johansson is not afraid to admit her losses.

In the M&M’s Super Bowl 2024 commercial, the actress stars alongside NFL legends Dan Marino, Terrell Owens and Bruce Smith – some of the greatest players to never win a Super Bowl. Johannson knows what it’s like to be “almost a champion,” having lost two Oscar nominations. In the clip above, the group brainstorms a new way to get their hands on the runner-up prize.

“Only Super Bowl winners get a ring, right? wrong! M&M’s presents Almost Champions: Ring of Comfort,” Marino says at the start of the clip. “It’s real science.”

The former Dolphins guard then explained what the hilarious rings were made of. “First we took the comforting, M&M’s peanut butter and turned it into real diamonds,” he says.

M&M characters appear and the yellow one says, “It doesn’t taste like peanut butter.” Brown M&M dismissively replies, “Don’t lick the bling.”

“Then we polish them to the sighs of those who almost won the Super Bowl,” jokes Marino. Smith and Owens are seen breathing over the jewelry. “Almost,” says Smith.

Johansson then appears with a red M&M holding a ring to her face. “I lost two races for the Oscar!” she says. The red M&M adds, “Same year!” (Johansson was nominated for an Oscar for Marriage story and Jojo Rabbit in 2020) In response, Johansson gives the candy character a disapproving look.

Red M&M closes the ad on a silly note as she hands Johansson one of the rings. “Don’t tell Marin that I gave you this,” he says.

When it comes to her appearance in the commercial for the big game, Johansson said her favorite part was encouraging everyone to have fun, win or lose.

“It’s playful and indulgent at the same time, just like one of my all-time favorite Mars candies, Peanut Butter M&M’S,” she said in the post. “I hope fans enjoy watching the commercial as much as I enjoyed making it.”

M&M’s entire 30-second ad is scheduled to air in the first quarter of the big game. The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII, which airs on CBS on February 11th at 6:30pm ET.
