See Gina Rodriguez in Trailer for 'Tender-Hearted and Irreverent' New Netflix Rom-Com Players

“It’s just a big, warm, good time,” “The Players” director Trish Sie tells PEOPLE

Gina Rodriguez stars permanently in her new rom-com.

On Thursday, Netflix debuted a trailer for Players exclusively with PEOPLE, featuring Rodriguez as New York City sportswriter Mack, who has made a habit of putting on “shows” with her friends (like Damon Wayans Jr.’s Adam) to win over potential dates on nights out.

Mack becomes interested in a war reporter named Nick (Tom Ellis) and realizes that she is interested in a relationship with him, not just a romantic relationship. As she confides in her friends that she wants to win Nick over, the group decides to put their companions to the test to help Mack and Nick fall in love.

“I went to college in New York and lived in Brooklyn. This felt like a love letter to Brooklyn, and there were so many memories that came flooding back during filming,” Rodriguez, 39, tells PEOPLE of the Big Apple setting.

About making a movie, Someone Big the actress says: “Because of this film, I have new friends who are there for me throughout my life.”

“They knew me before I was a mom and we had a blast, and now we’re having new experiences with my son — like movie dates at 1 p.m.!” she says with a laugh. “What I will remember most is how easy and joyful it was to create art and how it should be the norm. There was no ego. Total collaboration: when someone had a funnier joke, he wasn’t afraid to give it away. It was so beautiful.”

The synopsis for the film says that Mack, Adam, and the set of “plays” they use to land mates “comes with a strict set of ground rules — chief among them: you can’t build a relationship out of a game.”

“When Mack unexpectedly falls in love with her latest target, charming war reporter Nick, she begins to rethink the game entirely. As the lines between work, fun, friendship, and romance begin to blur, Mack must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for constantly.”

“The world needs a sweet escape,” Sie tells PEOPLE, which makes her new film perfect for Valentine’s Day viewing. “Players is both tender-hearted and disrespectful. It’s cheeky, but it’s kind. It’s a reminder that love is always possible and friendships are priceless.”
