Gunn, who previously wrote and directed the highly successful Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, he moved to DC Studios — formerly known as DC Films — in 2022 as co-executive director with executive producer Peter Safran. The two are building a new DC Cinematic Universe that will begin with the upcoming Superman: Legacy after the studio ended the DC Extended Universe with last year’s blockbusters Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Blue Beetle.

Henry Cavill, who played Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Extended Universe, has announced that he will no longer play the big-screen superhero in December 2022, and Gunn confirmed news that Corenswet and Brosnahan will star in the next Superman movie in June 2023.

While the plot of the next Superman film has yet to be revealed, Gunn has noted in the past that the upcoming film will not feature the character’s origin story. In February 2023, DC studio producer and co-CEO Safran said the film would focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” according to Deadline.

“Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is goodness in a world that considers goodness old-fashioned,” added Safran at the time.

Superman: Legacy arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.
