An older dog is moving several states away to continue his search for a forever home.
After spending 11 years — almost her entire life — in a shelter in south Alabama, 13-year-old Fergie moved to Wisconsin with the help of Second Chance Shelter, local media outlets WECT and WMTV reported.
Through the organization, Wanda McGee and her husband bring dogs from overcrowded shelters in Alabama to Wisconsin, where “there are no strays.” In Alabama, she told WMTV, “you see strays on every corner, almost.”

For McGee, who has transported hundreds of dogs like Fergie through Second Chance, it’s “definitely a labor of love.”
“You know, you certainly don’t make money doing this,” she said, adding, “There’s a world of difference.”
Fergie arrived in Wisconsin Saturday morning and was moved into a foster home set up by Whitewater rescue Albert’s Dog Lounge. She also took a new name: Fiona.
It’s been a long journey for the dog that McGee first met when the dog was young.
“She came from animal control and they had to trap her to catch her,” McGee told WMTV. “She was about a year old when we got her and she was pretty wild.”

“She only recently started letting us pet her,” she added.
Now newly appointed, Fiona spends time with Lindsey Decker, vice president of Albert’s Dog Lounge, until she finds a permanent owner.
“It’s a really joyful day for me to be able to bridge this gap between the shelter and her forever hopeful home,” Decker told WMTV. “Whether it’s with me or if we find her really amazing adopters while she’s with me, which is our goal, it’s a really joyful day.”

In her temporary home, Fiona now has other senior dogs to socialize with and acres and acres of yard to explore – a far cry from the shelter where she spent more than a decade of her life.
As Albert’s Dog Lounge posted on Facebook: “Fiona is soaking up new smells, roaming free, dining like a queen, making doggie friends and staying with me by the pellet stove as we search for the perfect FURever family for her.”
