On Monday, August 21, Serj Tankian turned 56 years old. Tom Morello posted a series of old pictures of him and his “beloved brother” on Instagram to commemorate the occasion. The Rage Against the Machine guitarist captioned the post, which included pictures of the pair over the years, “Happy birthday to my beloved brother Mr. @serjtankian!”
The most recent collaboration between Morell and the System of a Down singer was a cover of Gang of Four’s “Natural’s Not In It” for a tribute album to the band’s late co-founder Andy Gill.
With 2020’s “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” SOAD debuted brand new music for the first time in 15 years, but they haven’t released anything new since. Tankian said last October that the band would “release something” in 2023, but that deadline is getting closer. Aside from the songs, SOAD hasn’t released anything since 2006. Earlier this year, John Dolmayan expressed his displeasure with Tankian, saying the group “should have moved on” without him instead of going on hiatus nearly 20 years ago.
Serj hesitated to join the band for a while. And, to be completely honest, we probably should have stopped in 2006,” the drummer said at the time. There were rules in place that made it difficult to do that and support what System of a Down stands for, despite our repeated attempts to get together to make an album.
