Shakira Says Her Son Milan, 11, Processed Her Split from Gerard Piqué Through Music: ‘His Therapy’

Shakira’s love of music is passed on to her boys.

During a new interview with Zane Lowe, the musician (47) said that her sons Milan (11) and Sasha (9) have shown great interest in music. Noting that her sons know that music is “one of my ways to heal and express myself,” Shakira adds that Milan has started making his own music.

“I remember he wrote two beautiful songs during the whole separation process,” she says, referring to her split from Gerard Piqué, with whom she shares her two sons. “He wrote two songs on the piano and lyrics. And whenever he feels a little down, he goes to the piano and writes.”

Shakira opens up about balancing being a single mother and a pop star: ‘It’s a constant juggling act’

“And it’s also his catharsis, his therapy. I think he’ll probably be a producer, but he’s obsessed with football,” says the proud mom.

The artist adds that she and her sons “share a love for music” and “sometimes we play together.”

“Sasha is learning to play the guitar, and Milan is a really great drummer, so he takes the drums, Sash the guitar, I sing and we play at home.”

In September, Shakira spoke with Board about how she got used to being a single mother and a world-famous musician.

“Sometimes I think being a single mother and the beat of a pop star don’t go together,” she said. “I have to put the kids to bed, go to the recording studio; it’s all uphill.”

“When you don’t have a husband who can stay home with the kids, it’s a constant juggling act because I like to be a present mom and I have to be there every moment with my kids: take them to school, have breakfast with them, take them to play dates. And besides that, I have to earn.”

Since splitting from Piqué, Shakira said she’s been doing everything she can to “hide” the situation from her children. “I’m trying to do that and protect them because that’s my number one mission in life,” she said earlier ELLE.

At the same time, she was adamant about giving her sons as normal a life as possible.

“I can’t deny that I can’t escape the reality that I’m a public figure, like their dad,” Shakira told ET Canada in 2021. “But we try to provide as much normality as possible and live as very simple people.”
