He passed the UPSC examination in 1990 and was posted to the Tamil Nadu cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS) on September 15, 1991. He was appointed as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Mannargudi in 1993, Salem District Superintendent of Police in 1995 and ADC to the then Governor of Tamil Nadu in 1996. He became the Madurai District Superintendent of Police in 1999, the Superintendent of Police and Regional Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chennai in 2000. In 2004, he served as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and Chief of Police (CoP) of Trichy City.
He was appointed as DIG, Intelligence Wing II, Chennai in 2008, as Director General of Intelligence Police (IGP), Chennai in 2011 and as IGP, Special Task Force (STF), Erode, in 2011. In 2015, he served as the Director General of Police (ADGP), Erode STF, and in 2021, he served as the DGP and CoP of Greater Chennai Police. He assumed office as DGP of Tamil Nadu on July 1, 2023. He also held other important positions including the IGP Internal Security Wing and set up the Organized Crime Intelligence Unit in Tamil Nadu. He is credited with acquiring modern, state-of-the-art surveillance tools for the Tamil Nadu police.
