Profession
surgeon
After completing his master’s degree in Canada, Sharad Panday returned to India and was appointed as the Director of Ward II at King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (KEM), Mumbai. He performed multiple open-heart surgeries in the early 1980s, when the procedure was in its infancy. In 1986, Dr Sharad Panday performed an unusual heart surgery to remove a large tumor from a patient’s left ventricle at the Max Super Specialty Hospital in Nanavati, Mumbai. This is the first time such surgery has been performed in India as it is difficult to operate on tumors in that part of the heart.
Pandey is known for his creativity and wading into knee-deep water to perform surgeries. If the hospital loses water, he takes a 0.5-inch (13 mm) pipe and connects it to a garden hose so everyone can be ready for surgery. The Pandey shunt is a surgical technique used to replace the mitral valve that Pandey invented out of his need to improvise and adapt.
