Shazia Ilmi was born on Thursday, April 2, 1970 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh (51 years old as of 2021). She attended St. Mary’s School in Kanpur and then went to St. Bede’s College in Shimla for her graduation. Thereafter, she studied Mass Communication at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Aligarh. She then moved to Cardiff to study journalism and broadcasting at the University of Wales. Ilmi also received a diploma in 16mm filmmaking from the New York Film Academy.

Shazia comes from a Muslim family. Her father Maulana Ishaq Ilmi is the founder of Siyasat Jadid, an Urdu newspaper in Kanpur. Her mother’s name is Naushaba Ilmi. She has 4 brothers and 1 sister. Shazia is the youngest among them. Her sister Reshma Ilmi is married to Arif Mohammed Khan, a former Union Cabinet Minister of India. Her brother Dr Aijaz Ilmi is the spokesperson of the BJP. Her brother Rashid Ilmi is also a politician. She also has a brother named Irshad Irmi. Shazia’s husband, Sajid Mallik, is an investment banker and entrepreneur in New Delhi. Her husband is half Gujarati Muslim and half Tamil Ayre. The couple has a daughter.
Profession
Shazia started her career as a news reporter and anchor. She has worked in television news and documentary production for 15 years. Ilmi hosts and produces Star News’ primetime news program Desh Videsh. She has also produced and hosted several current affairs programs and documentaries focusing on gender bias and minority rights issues in India. She is a member of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT). In 2011, she made a film called “PO 418 Siyasat Kanpur”, which told the story of an Urdu newspaper’s struggle for survival. The film was screened at the IAWRT Film Festival and similar film festivals in Kerala.
In 2011, she became the spokesperson for Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign in India. Later, she joined the Aam Aadmi Party. She contested on behalf of AAP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Ghaziabad constituency but lost to VK Singh.
Shazia resigned from AAP on May 24, 2014, and later joined the BJP on January 16, 2015. In 2017, she was appointed as Additional Director of Engineers India Ltd (EIL).
On July 21, 2021, she was appointed as the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

- In 2013, her mother Naushaba Ilmi sought protection from the police after she allegedly abused her and became aggressive during a family property dispute. Her mother told news reporters: “I was ready to go to jail to escape her torture. But I will continue to fight for justice while she and her brother Irshad (Ilmi) deprived me of my other children of justice.”
- In April 2014, a video went viral on social media in which Shazia made some controversial remarks about the secularization of Muslims. She said – “Don’t be too secular. Muslims are too secular, they should become communal. They are not communal and do not vote for themselves. Arvind Kejriwal is ours. Muslims have remained secular for long… vote for Congress party and help them win. Stop being so worldly this time and look at your house.” However, her party distanced itself from her remarks, saying it did not support the view.
- Ilmi is also accused of receiving AAP funds through some illegal means. A sting operation was conducted against Aam Aadmi Party members, which revealed that Shazia and some other leaders of AAP were accepting money in exchange for favors. However, the authenticity of the video has not been confirmed.
