Shelly Oberoi is an Indian politician, academician and teacher. She hit the headlines after winning the Delhi MCD election from East Patel Nagar Ward 86 on December 7, 2022, following which the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced her as its mayoral candidate in February 2023 Became Mayor of Delhi on 22nd.

Shelly Oberoi was born in 1983 in Delhi, India (age 40 in 2023). After completing her education at Faith College, New Delhi, she attended Yankee Devi Memorial College, Delhi, where she received a bachelor’s degree in commerce. Shelly received the Miss Kamla Rani Award and Scholarship for achieving the highest marks during her B-school studies. Later, she received her Masters in Commerce from Himachal Pradesh University. She received her Master of Philosophy degree from Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu. In May 2017, she entered the School of Management (SOMS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to pursue her PhD. Shelly Oberoi also completed Postgraduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) from Symbiosis International University, Pune, Maharashtra. From 2021 to 2022, she is pursuing a certification course in business management at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kozhikode. Shelly passed the University Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) examination.

Shelly Oberoi’s political career began in 2013 when she joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). After joining the party, she participated in many activities organized by the party as an activist. In 2020, she was appointed as the state vice-president of the women’s wing of the Aam Aadmi Party. In December 2022, she contested the municipal elections from Ward No. 86 of East Patel Nagar in Delhi under the name of Aam Aadmi Party. In the election, she defeated her BJP rival by a margin of 269 votes. Later, AAP nominated her as its mayoral candidate. She said in an interview that if she is elected as the mayor of Delhi, her first priority will be hygiene and cleanliness in Delhi. She further said,
Over the next few months we will work together to make Derry the city it deserves to be. The BJP turned Delhi into the “garbage capital of the country” during its 15-year tenure. We will work together to ensure that Delhi becomes clean again, fulfills the Prime Minister’s promise and delivers on the Ten Assurances. Our goal is to make Derry a better place together with everyone. We will develop a blueprint for cleaning up our capital as soon as possible; we will start by clearing the mountains of rubbish in the city. All 250 MPs will come together to clean up and transform Delhi… They have already started working in their respective constituencies. “
On February 22, 2023, in the fourth mayoral election, she was elected as the Mayor of Delhi with 150 votes; Rekha Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party received 116 votes. On April 26, 2023, she retained the post of Mayor of Delhi after the BJP withdrew from the Delhi Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections.
Teaching and Academicians
Shelly Oberoi started working as an Assistant Professor at the University of Delhi in September 2014. In January 2021, she started working as Assistant Professor (Visiting Professor) at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai. During her teaching career, she has authored over 35 research papers and journals, such as Emotional Intelligence: An Extensive Literature Review, The Impact of Blockchain Technology and 5G/IoT on Supply Chain Management and Trade Finance, and Cybersecurity in India: Threats and Challenges. Her research papers have been discussed on national and international platforms. Shelly Oberoi was also invited to give lectures to Gyan Darshan and Gyan Vani of Doordarshan.
