Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Chaka Khan, Willie Nelson Among Stars Inducted into 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has new members!

Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Chaka Khan and Willie Nelson were among the stars inducted Friday at the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, which was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York City.

Crow, 61, opened the show by performing the 1996 hit “If It Makes You Happy” with Olivia Rodrigo.

“It was an honor to join Sheryl on stage and I’m so excited for her to be inducted into the RRHOF!” Rodrigo, 20, later said in a statement to PEOPLE. “I’m a huge fan of hers and her incredible songwriting,” she continued. “She is as kind as she is talented and I feel so lucky to have been a part of celebrating such a legend.”

Crow was then introduced by friend Laura Dern, and was later joined on stage by colleague Nelson, 90, and Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Peter Frampton.

“It doesn’t get any better than that. They both kept coming and kissing me!” Frampton said Associated Press sharing the stage with Nicks, 75, and Crowe after the ceremony. “To have them both up there, that’s pretty amazing. And Sheryl brought me here, and I can’t thank her enough for that.”

Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of her induction, Crow shared how “excited” she is to release her new album Evolution March 29.

“I said I was never going to make another record and I ended up with a bunch of songs that I just wanted to release,” she explained of the beginnings of recording.

“These are all things that I feel are relevant to what’s going on right now,” the country star added. “And the whole thing started with a song about artificial intelligence, and the album is called Evolutionwhich is about it.”

Elliott, 52, was honored to become the first female hip-hop artist in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after being inducted by Queen Latifah, in a year that saw several female and black artists honored during the ceremony.

“Nothing sounded the same after Missy came on the scene,” Latifah, 53, said in her speech. “Everything has changed – the bass lines have changed, the pockets have changed, the cadence, the writing has changed. And that’s because Missy has always been a futurist, someone who’s always looking ahead.”

Elliott then performed a string of her hits, including “Pass That Dutch,” “Get Ur Freak On” and “Work It,” before giving a speech in which she highlighted, according to Associated Pressthat she was honored to be inducted during the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

“It means a lot to me to be standing here,” she said AP. “I’m honored to be in the room with all of you.”

“Queen of Funk” singer Khan, 70, was introduced by singer Jasmine Sullivan. During the ceremony, she performed the hits “Ain’t Nobody” with HER, “I Feel For You” with Common, “Sweet Thing” and “I’m Every Woman” with Sia.

Elton John also made an appearance as he performed with Crowe, Chris Stapleton and Brittany Howard for the memoriam portion of the show. According to Pitchfork, late stars honored included Tina Turner, Sinéad O’Connor, Jimmy Buffett, David Crosby and Harry Belafonte.

John, 76, also paid tribute to longtime friend and collaborator Bernie Taupin, who was inducted during Friday’s event.

Of his induction, Taupin told PEOPLE, “I wasn’t really surprised because I had a hunch it was going to happen and I knew there were people out there solving problems and talking to the right people and saying, ‘It’s about time.’ ‘ I guess it’s about time.”

Meanwhile, Nelson performed several times throughout the night, including Chris Stapleton and fellow recruit Crowand he was introduced by Dave Matthews.

Other acts inducted into this year’s Roll Hall included Rage Against the Machine, The Spinners, Al Kooper, Kate Bush — who was not in attendance — and George Michael, posthumously.

“George Michael Entertainment, the estate and George’s family are deeply grateful to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and to everyone who voted for George Michael’s induction this year,” Michael’s estate said in a statement. “This is a great honor for one of the world’s greatest artists, songwriters and producers.”
