Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was an Indian seer (a person who can foresee the future) and the pontiff (chief priest) of Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Bruhanmutt Chitradurga. He belongs to the Lingayat community (a community established to disrupt the Hindu Brahminical order) mainly in Karnataka. He was arrested on Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act charges and released in 2023 after 14 months.

Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was born on Friday, April 11, 1958, in Godabanahal village, Chitradurga district, Karnataka (age 65; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Aries. He completed his primary education in the village and graduated from Mysore University. On January 31, 1991, he was appointed Pope and became the successor of Sri Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra Swamiji to Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Bruhanmutt.

In September 2022, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was arrested on sexual assault charges and charged with rape and sexual harassment. The FIR was lodged by minor girls aged 15 and 16, who were staying in a hotel run by a mutt, with the girls alleging that Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru subjected them to “sexual abuse” for several years. A case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) and the seer was placed under house arrest in Bankhapura town in Karnataka. The defendant was released on bail on November 8, 2023, and was released from prison on November 16, 2023. However, on November 20, 2023, Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was arrested again and remanded in judicial custody till December 2, 2023, in connection with the second POCSO case in which an inability to appear and “failure to attend court hearing” was issued. Bail warrant. Later, the seer moved the Karnataka High Court and an order was passed seeking his immediate release. The high court asked the special court to stay charges against him under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the Religious Institutions (Prevention of Abuse) Act and Section 201 (Destruction of Evidence) of the Indian Penal Code . . In October 2022, a woman filed an FIR against Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, accusing him of sexually molesting her minor daughter.
