Shivraj Singh Chouhan is a prominent leader in the political sphere of Madhya Pradesh. He served as chief minister of the state for several terms. He began his career as a teenager by joining the Kuomintang and later became a key figure in national politics. He served five times as a member of Congress and proved his ability with great efficiency. Be it assembly or parliamentary elections, Chouhan has disappointed the opposition most of the time.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan was born on March 5, 1959, in a Kirar family in Jait village, Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh (age: 65 years; as of 2024). His father Shri Prem Singh Chouhan was a farmer and Shivraj was also a farmer in his early years. He studied at TT Nagar Model High School in Bhopal and served as the president of the school’s student union. Chauhan excelled in this study and completed his postgraduate studies in philosophy from Bhakatulla University, Bhopal, where he received a gold medal. In 1972, at the age of 13, he joined the RSS and volunteered in the anti-Emergency movement in 1976. In 1978, he was appointed as the organizational secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In the same year, he became the joint secretary-general of ABVP. He was born to Shri Prem Singh Chouhan and Smt. Sundarbhai Chauhan. He has two younger brothers: Narendra Singh Chouhan and Surjit Singh Chouhan (politician).
In 1992, he married Sadhna Singh Chauhan.
He has two sons: Kartkey Chouhan and Kunal Chouhan and an adopted daughter Rinky. His son Karticey is a lawyer and the founder and promoter of Sunder Dairy.
Profession
In 1984, Chauhan became the joint secretary of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party). The following year, he was appointed general secretary of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha. In 1988, he became chairman of the same wing. In 1990, he contested the parliamentary election for the Budni constituency for the first time and won.
In 1991, he first became a Member of Parliament for Vidisha constituency in Madhya Pradesh and was elected to this constituency for five consecutive terms until 2004.
In the 2003 state assembly elections, Chouhan ran unsuccessfully against the current Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh from Lagogarh.
Chouhan was elected as the chief minister of the country on November 30, 2005 when he was the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He won the Budney constituency by 36,000 votes in the 2006 by-election. He retained the Budney constituency in 2005. in the 2008 state assembly elections and led his party to its second consecutive victory in the state. In December 2013, he won the Budhni constituency by a margin of 1,28,730 votes and was re-elected as the chief minister of the state for the third time in January 2014. On March 23, 2020, Kamal Nath resigned as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh again.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan contested the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket and won from Budhni constituency; he won the election by a margin of 1,04,974 votes.
He won the Vidisha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, defeating Congress MP Pratap Bhanu Sharma by 8,21,408 votes.

- In 2007, a Bhopal court, acting on a complaint by Congress leader and lawyer Ramesh Sahu, ordered an inquiry against him and his wife Sadhna Singh. Sadhna Singh allegedly purchased four dump trucks for Rs 2 crore and later leased them to a cement factory. There were also allegations against her that she gave a false residential address and gave her husband’s name “SR Singh” incorrectly. Following this, the Lokayutta police registered a case against the CM and his wife under IPC 420 and Prevention of Corruption Act. However, due to lack of sufficient evidence, the two were found innocent in 2011.
- In 2009, Chouhan was condemned across the country for trying to promote regionalism and making comments about hiring locals from Madhya Pradesh instead of the state’s “Biharis”. However, he later clarified his views and said that everyone is welcome in Madhya Pradesh.
- In 2009, Indore-based doctor and activist Dr Anand Rai filed a PIL in the Jabalpur High Court highlighting Vyapam’s irregularities in the examination and recruitment process. PIL leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan constituted an inquiry committee. The case was initially handled by the Special Task Force (STF), but in 2015, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s name was also dragged into the Vyapam Scam. He was heavily criticized for this, but in 2017 he was given a clean bill by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Vyapam’s whistleblower, however, has questioned the CBI’s credibility and said it had tampered with evidence to save him.

- As a child, he developed a hobby of swimming and often swam in the Narmada River.

- On July 5, 2023, he posted a video on Twitter in which he was seen washing the feet of Dasmat Ravat, a 36-year-old tribal member from Kalundi in Madhya Pradesh. The video was shared in response to a viral video in which a man named Pravesh Shukla was seen urinating on Dasmat Ravat while smoking, This is disrespectful to him. The viral video was heavily criticized on social media, leading the chief minister to take firm action against Shukla. As a result, Shukla’s house was demolished and he was arrested on July 4, 2023, under the National Security Act.

- On January 3, 2024, Shivraj Singh named his new government bungalow in Bhopal as “Mama ka Ghar” (Uncle’s House). After he resigned as chief minister, he moved to this official residence from the chief minister’s residence. Singh announced the news on X and invited people to come to him for help at any time, despite the change of address.
