She was born in Chandigarh, India on April 23, 1974 but she grew up in several different places including Kerala, Pathankot, Pune and Allahabad as her father was in the Indian Air Force member. Her hometown is Valancherry in Malappuram district in the state of Kerala, India. She has been interested in acting and modeling since childhood. She has achieved huge success in her acting career and is now a part of the controversial reality show Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 1 hosted by Mohanlal.

In 2004, Shweta married actor and writer Bobby Bhonsle, but the marriage did not last long and the two divorced in 2007. She subsequently married journalist Sreevalsan Menon on June 18, 2011, and the couple had a daughter, Sabaina Menon, who was born in 2012.

As her father frequently changed schools, she attended different schools, one of which was Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, East Hill, Kozhikode, Kerala. She made her acting debut in the Malayalam film Anaswaram in 1991, playing the role of Katherine. During this period, she participated in many beauty pageants and was crowned Miss Bangalore.
In 1994, Shweta participated in the Miss India beauty pageant and won the second runner-up, Aishwarya Rai won the second runner-up, and Sushmita Sen won the championship. That same year, she became the first Gladras female supermodel. Since then, she has had many opportunities to work with famous models. She even directed a number of shows with them.

- In 2004, a complaint was filed against Shweta, accusing her of insulting the national flag. She walked the ramp wrapped in the national flag at a fashion show organized by the National Institute of Fashion Design.
- In 2011, she filed a complaint against KC Abraham, director of Kunnath Pharmaceuticals, for allegedly misusing her photos to promote their Ayurvedic aphrodisiac Musli Power Extra.
- In 2012, Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly G. Karthikeyan criticized her for allowing the Malayalam film Kalimannu to film her delivery. The Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation also opposed the move and said they would boycott the film if director Blessy included a delivery scene in the film.
- In 2013, she filed an FIR against N. Peethambara Kurup, accusing him of molesting her during the President’s Trophy boat race. However, Shweta withdrew the complaint after apologizing to her.
