Accused of torturing her father for property
In 2015, she moved to India from Germany and moved into her parents’ home, where her father lived alone after her mother passed away. According to her father, Shweta began abusing him within months of moving into his home and insulted the two maids who had cared for him for over 26 years. She also asked for a share of her father’s fortune. After the Mumbai Welfare Tribunal and the Deputy Collector evicted her from her father’s apartment, she filed a petition in the Bombay High Court challenging the orders of the Welfare Tribunal and the Deputy Collector and demanding a share of her shares. After several hearings, the Bombay High Court issued an order which read:
The singer had no right to claim a share of his father’s estate while he was still alive. Shweta asks her to share. What was her “share” while he was alive? She didn’t. It is true that he (the father) may give up his apartment and all his possessions during his lifetime. That’s his choice. She couldn’t stop him from doing it. As long as Shweta is alive, he has no “share” in his property. In case after case, we have received complaints from senior citizens that their own sons and daughters are harassing them. In each case, harassment is an attempt to take possession of an older person’s lifetime possessions in a manner that has no regard for the physical or mental health, well-being, or happiness of those older adults. “
Facts/Trivia
- In 1997, after getting married, she suffered a major car accident and was bedridden for several months. She revealed in an interview that she fell into depression after the accident. she says,
I was at my peak when I came back to India and suddenly I found myself stuck in a bed in a foreign country where no one knew me and I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t understand the language, the Germans weren’t very friendly, and I didn’t have my music, which until then had been my life. I fell into a severe depression that lasted almost a year. “
