When Shyam was studying at Rama Devi College, he met Droupadi Murmu who was pursuing a degree in the same college. Initially, they became friends and soon fell in love with each other. According to sources, he met with Drupadi’s parents in 1980 to discuss his marriage to Drupadi. According to reports, Biranchi Narayan Tudu (Drupadi’s father) rejected Shyam’s proposal and was unhappy with Drupadi. Later, Shyam Charan, along with relatives and friends, came to Droupadi’s house and persuaded Droupadi’s father to accept his proposal. He even stayed there for three or four days. Shyam and Droupadi got married in 1980 after convincing Droupadi’s father. Shyam’s uncle spoke about Shyam and Droupadi’s marriage in an interview and said,

Droupadi belongs to the Santhal tribe. The dowry of this tribe usually comes from the groom’s side. At the time of marriage, the groom’s side decides to give a bull, a cow and 16 pieces of clothing to the bride as a dowry. At Draupadi and Shyam’s wedding, there was a feast of red and yellow country chicken. And then this is done almost everywhere in marriage. “

Later, Droupadi Murmu started working as a teacher. Drupadi began her political career in 1997. On July 21, 2022, she defeated Yashwant Sinha in the 2022 Indian presidential election and was elected as the 15th President of India.

In 1984, the couple had a daughter, but she died at the age of 3. The couple has two sons named Laxman Murmu and Sipun Murmu and a daughter named Itishree Murmu who is a banker. On October 25, 2009, Laxman Murmu, who used to live with his uncle and aunt, died mysteriously, and on January 2, 2013, Sipun Murmu died in an accident.
