Sister Wives' Kody and Janelle Reveal 2-3 Prior Separations as She Disavows His Digs at Christine (Exclusive)

In PEOPLE’s exclusive look at Sunday’s episode of ‘Sister Wives,’ Janelle tells Kody she’s interested in counseling because she still has “love” for him but wants to “stay apart for now”

Janella and Kody Brown’s divorce is looming in the upcoming episode Sister wives.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek of Sunday’s episode, Kody, 54, sits down with Janelle, 54, after the couple have been apart for a while following their big fight. Janelle then asks that they keep their space and continue their separation. (Since the season ended filming in 2022, Janelle and Kody announced they were separating after 19 years together.)

The clip, however, begins with Janelle explaining to the cameras how she feels slighted by Kody’s lack of “attention” to their relationship, as a result of his divorce from her co-star wife Christine Brown in 2021.

“Be a man [and] separate your relationships as you have for our entire polygamous marriage, and pay attention to this,” she adds.

The confessional is followed by footage of a couple in a restaurant as they begin to discuss their current relationship status.

After a long moment of silence between the two, Janelle opens up and directly states her future expectations for their relationship. “I think I want to stay separated for now,” she says.

Kody quickly replies, “You really want to stay apart?” Janelle then suggests that their separation is the right thing for her.

Kody reacts to Janelle’s request in a separate confessional, saying he’s “kind of surprised she doesn’t want to try to reconcile.”

“We’ve been separated probably two or three times in the past,” he continues. “[It] she always felt like it was because she couldn’t manage her relationship with her sisters. I never felt like it was over.”

As the two continue their conversation, Janelle offers the possibility of going to counseling together, as she still harbors “affection” for her longtime husband. Kody agrees, mentioning how his relationship with Christine, 51, could have benefited from counseling. “I think it’s fairer that way. Christine just dropped this on me,” says Kody.

As they discuss what’s next in their relationship, Kody says he felt “rejected” by Janelle and Christina after they celebrated Christmas with their kids but didn’t invite Kody.

As Janelle explains that they have organized separate celebrations, he explains that he wants their relationship and separation to be different from what happened with Christine. “I don’t want to be in a place where we just act like nothing happened. I think that in a way it was happening to Christina and me,” he says.

“When I would talk to her about our relationship, we were too embarrassed,” he continues. “Yet she left with me as if she was holding a bag, never knowing she was going to leave. She made plans and talked to people about leaving.”

As the clip ends, Janelle tells the cameras how “shocked” she is by Kody’s reaction to Christine’s divorce. “He claims he never predicted it,” she says. “He told me for years that he was not attracted to Christine. They struggled in their marriage.”

She concludes: “I would have left his ass the first time he told me that.”
