The 47-year-old revealed he was diagnosed with the disease last year – despite showing no symptoms.
However, he did not reveal what type of cancer he was fighting.
The Scottish Olympian boldly wrote in a statement: “I have some news.
“I was diagnosed with cancer last year, which was a big shock, because until then I had no symptoms.
“I am currently undergoing treatment, including chemotherapy, which fortunately is going very well.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the medical professionals for their incredible help and care.
“For the sake of my young family, I had hoped to keep this information private, but unfortunately our hand was forced.
“While I appreciate any support, I would like to resolve this privately.”
Hoy – who will be cheered on by wife Sarra and their children Callum, nine, and Chloe, six – was inundated with messages from well-wishers after opening up about his battle with the disease.
