SNL’s Colin Jost and Michael Che Are Hosting a Countdown to St. Patrick’s Day in Times Square (Exclusive)

Colin Jost and Michael Che don’t want people to be fooled by a happy St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick.

Since 2024 is a leap year, the holiday skips Saturday and falls on Sunday. Therefore, Saturday night live The hosts of “Weekend Update” teamed up with Jameson Irish Whiskey to promote “St. Patrick’s Eve,” along with a countdown celebration they’ll be hosting in Times Square on March 16.

“We don’t really like doing brand deals; it’s none of our business,” Che tells PEOPLE. “But for a really good cause, like a leap year, I think we had to.”

Che predicts it will be “probably the greatest holiday that will ever exist. Even though we just found out about it, it seems like we’ve been celebrating it forever,” he jokes.

As for their upcoming event, Jost tells PEOPLE, “I think this will be at least the second biggest countdown of the year that happens in Times Square. The first two, for sure.”

Che’s drink of choice is ginger whiskey, which Jost says was his favorite drink on the road while doing standup.

When asked which SNL cast member is the most fun to drink with, Jost says, “I feel like we drank Jameson ginger beer with the guys from PDD,” referring to the comedy group Please Don’t Destroy, which consists of Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy.

“Obviously St. Patrick’s Day is a big deal in New York,” says Che. “I just always love that everyone is together in the same spirit. It’s very rare for a city this big to find something we can all agree on and it’s just cool to see everyone on the same page and having a good time.”

“Have you ever marched in a parade, Che?” – asks Jost.

“Marching in a parade? What am I, a policeman? No, I’ve never marched in a parade, but I’ve seen it maybe 40 times,” Che replies.

Jost was part of the annual tradition as a kid with his mom and grandfather who were firefighters. “I never thought about it until now, but it’s crazy to be in a parade and see people watching the parade as a kid,” he says.

Now with a child of his own — Jost shares two-year-old son Cosmo with wife Scarlett Johansson — Jost makes memories for him in the kitchen.

Recently, “I made one meal for my family, which I was quite proud of,” he says. “It was really spicy salmon over Mediterranean rice with feta and tomato and olives and all that.”

“You did it?” Che asks.

“I swear to God, I made it,” Jost replies.

He asks Che: “Well, why? Did you see a recipe or something, or what inspired you to make a Mediterranean dish for your family?”

“Now I’m on dinner-making duty once a week, so I had to look for something I could do. It seemed to me that I could do it,” explains Jost.

When Jost and Che were at their usual SNL October, they had two very exciting guests: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Che says he was “so surprised” when they showed up.

“Honestly, I was freaking out, because it’s obviously a very exciting thing,” he adds.

“I saw them in the hallway,” Jost recalls. “I also didn’t know if they would want to do anything or if they would just lay low, but then they just fell into a few things, which was fun.”

“Yeah, it was crazy,” says Che. “Pandemonium, as we call it in the business.”
