SNL's Weekend Update Opens 2025 with Jokes on Donald Trump, TikTok and Nosferatu: Full Recap

Colin Jost and Michael Che started Saturday night liveFirst weekend update of 2025 with a bang.

During the Jan. 18 episode, hosted by Dave Chappelle and featuring musical guest GloRilla, Jost, 42, and Che, 41, poked fun at various current events, including news of Donald Trump, the TikTok ban and the recent Nosferatu remake.

Speaking first about Trump, 78, Jost joked: “Well, folks. This is the dawn of a new era. Donald Trump released his official inauguration portrait and the photo was lit, I guess, hell breaking loose.”

He then teased Trump for “trying to look so hardcore” in the photo, which drew comparisons to his 2023 photo, saying he was “surprised” a “parental advisory and durag” were not added to the image.

Che then took a swing at Trump, mocking how his inauguration ceremony on Monday, January 20, was moved outside the US Capitol building due to expected cold temperatures.

“Hey, just like last time,” Che exclaimed as an image of the riot on January 6, 2021, where pro-Trump rioters stormed a building in Washington, DC, appeared on the screen.

Noting that Trump’s inauguration falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Che joked: “What if Dr. King alive today, I bet Trump would walk right up to him and say, ‘Oh shit, that’s Ben Carson,’ referring to the political figure who previously ran against Trump.

Next, SNL Actor Michael Longfellow has spoken out about the TikTok ban, shortly after the social media app was officially shut down just hours before.

Responding to Che’s claim that there were “legitimate reasons” to ban the app, Longfellow, 30, hit back, saying: “Like what? Because it’s Chinese? So we’re just banning things because they’re from China now?”

Then pointing upwards, Longfellow continued: “You know who else was from China? That’s right, Jesus Christ. I thought he was from the Middle East, but I saw it on TikTok: Chinese!”

As for data privacy concerns, the comedian teased, “Who cares about my data? Oh no, China knows I like fat Latinas. Who doesn’t love? Give me a break.”

Longfellow also mocked his use of TikTok, telling Che: “I don’t have the attention span. I have ADHD.”

“I’ll never forget the diagnosis. It was last year. I took the TikTok quiz and the third time it said I might have ADHD,” he continued, adding that TikTok prescribed him Adderall.

Another standout moment from the January 18 Weekend Update segment was when Sarah Sherman portrayed the original Nosferatu from the 1922 film to comment on Robert Eggers’ new painting.

“I thought it was a no-brainer,” Sherman said while wearing various prosthetics to look like an evil character.

“Just kidding, just kidding,” she continued. “I really liked the movie, though it would be nice to get an audition. Like, get back to me, bro.”

Still, Jost suspected Sherman’s Nosferatu was jealous of the updated feature, amid many shots in which the scene switched to a black-and-white filter as eerie piano chords played.

Jost and Che had previously closed SNL’s Weekend update in December 2024 with a joke exchange, where they wrote jokes to each other and read them live — despite never having seen them before.

Twice during the segment, Jost read jokes aimed at his wife, Scarlett Johansson, who had previously appeared during the episode’s opening monologue to introduce Martin Short to the series’ Five-Timers Club.

“You all know that Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday,” Jost said, already looking worried about what’s to come. “Which means I’m about to get out of there!”

“No, no. I’m just playing,” he continued. “We just had a baby together and you haven’t seen pictures of him yet because he’s black as hell.”

The camera then cut to Johansson, 40, who shook her head and grimaced.

Later in the segment, Jost announced that “Costco took their roast beef sandwich off their menu,” adding, “But I’m not tripping, I’ve had roast beef every night since my wife had a baby.”

Johansson was then captured backstage looking shocked, mouthing: “Oh my God.”

However, Jost had a chance to get back at Che for writing jokes for him about Jeffrey Epstein and the recent allegations involving Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z.
