Sofía Vergara Says She Took Great Lengths to Hide Her Curves to Play Griselda: 'I'd Wrap Myself So My Butt Wouldn't Jiggle'

Sofía Vergara hid her bombshell appearance to transform into cartel leader Griselda Blanco.

In an interview with Diversitypublished on Wednesday, August 14, the 52-year-old actress opened up about the physical transformation she went through to play the title character in the Netflix miniseries Griseldawhich is based on the life of a Colombian drug lord.

The Modern family The alum noted that Blanco looks different from her in real life. “Maybe she wasn’t a Barbie doll, but the real Griselda Blanco had something — she had a kind of sexiness that I needed to show,” Vergara said, adding that she wanted to cover up her curves and didn’t want to “shake.”

“I didn’t want to show the bounce that’s natural for Latina women. I would have to wrap myself up so my bottom wouldn’t vibrate. I had to wear a really bad bra,” Vergara said, before noting that she also covered the other part of her bodies.

According to media reports, Vergara spent more than four hours a day in hair and makeup to transform into Blanco, which included prosthetics, face and body makeup, and heavy wig application.

Vergara also picked up a few new skills for the role, including smoking – which director Andrés Baiz taught her.

“I’ve never smoked in my life. Andy would come over to my house a month before we started. We’d talk about the script and he’d teach me how to smoke and do cocaine and crack,” she said.

In the same interview, Vergara talked about a potential future Modern family. She constantly jokes with her ex-husband Ed O’Neill about how he can’t die before they make a sequel, she told Diversity.

“I always joke with him: ‘Ed, don’t die. Because if we’re doing a sequel, it’s going to take a while, and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead!’ Vergara said.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in 2023, Vergara talked about how her transformation in La Jefo was more than just physical. “I had to change the way I walked [and] I talked. I didn’t want her to look like Gloria Pritchett with a fake nose,” she said, referring to her Modern family character. “I wanted people to forget about Gloria – that was the main thing.”

Ahead of the show’s release, Netflix shared a behind-the-scenes look that highlighted Vergara’s look, with Baiz noting that Vergara’s physical transformation “was one of the most difficult aspects of the entire show.”

But the actress said her hard work has paid off, telling PEOPLE in a separate interview, “People who have watched it now have been so responsive and have been telling me how much they love it. It’s really exciting to see how people react to it.”

Griseldawhich earned Vergari her fifth Primetime Emmy nomination, is now streaming on Netflix.
