Sophie Turner 'Hated' Being Called 'the Wives' of the Jonas Brothers: 'The Perception of Us Was as the Groupies'

Sophie Turner doesn’t want to be seen as someone else’s extra person.

In a new interview for the cover with British VogueThe 28-year-old actress and mother of two opened up about the origins of her marriage to estranged husband Joe Jonas and felt frustrated by the general public’s perception of herself and the wives of the other Jonas Brothers.

The pair went on their first date at a pub in London’s Camden area in 2016. “Joe just DMed me on Instagram,” Turner recalled to the outlet. “I brought my brother and all my friends because I didn’t know if I might catch a catfish.”

Fortunately, Jonas wasn’t hunting Turner. In fact, their romance blossomed very quickly, as the 34-year-old “Cake by the Ocean” singer proposed about a year after they met. They tied the knot last minute at the famous A Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas in 2019, followed by a second ceremony at Le Château de Tourreau in Sarrians, France the same year.

“It was really surreal, like a fever dream,” he reflected Game of Thrones actress about marrying Jonas and moving to Los Angeles. “Because he was older than me, I felt like he really cared about me, to the point where I came home and didn’t know how to do anything for myself.”

Turner wasn’t a big fan of living in LA, she said British Vogueand while the Jonas family welcomed her with open arms, she began to notice that many people saw her with her husband.

“There was a lot of focus on the three brothers and their wives,” she said, referring to Nick and Kevin’s wives, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Danielle Jonas. “Well, they always called us wives, and I hated it.”

“It was kind of a plus one feeling,” Turner added. “And it’s nothing to do with him – he didn’t make me feel that way in any way – it was just the perception of us as groups in a band.”

She and Jonas welcomed their first child, daughter Willa, in 2020, and moved to Miami the following year (where she “had no friends,” per British Vogue) and had their second child, daughter Delphine, in 2022. By the end of 2023, he filed for divorce.

“After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” read a statement released by the ex-spouses in September 2023. “There are many speculative stories as to why, but this is truly a mutual decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our desire for privacy for us and our children.”
