WITH Squid game With Season 2 just around the corner, director Hwang Dong-hyuk shares the little details fans should pay attention to when re-watching Season 1.
In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, Hwang reveals that fans will see familiar faces and places as he teases what viewers can expect in the next installment of the Emmy-winning drama.
“There are characters that appear in the first season that appear again in the second season, so it would be really fun to see them,” he explains. “You’ll be surprised to see them again in season two, [Park] Jung-bae [Lee Seo-hwan] be the biggest role in that case.”

In the first season, viewers were introduced to Park, the protagonist Seong Gi-hun [Lee Jung-jae] a longtime friend who refuses to lend him more money for his gambling debts. Hwang also says other recurring characters will include a greengrocer [Kim Pub-lae] Gi-hun borrows from a North Korean broker who defected to Sae-byeok [Jung Ho-yeon] is looking for his mother.
“So that’s going to be a fun thing to look out for,” Hwang teases.
As eager viewers prepare to devour the long-awaited second season, the director also highlights the “biggest differences” between the first and second installments.
“In the first season, it was a pretty linear telling of the story of Gi-hun participating in the Squid Game and his story of how he survives, what he goes through and what he experiences?”

“Whereas in Season 2, now you meet Gi-hun who is extremely purpose-driven, who still has hope that there is hope for humanity and that there is hope left in the world and the conflict between this Gi-hun and the first man who will do everything to break Gi-hun’s beliefs and trust.”
Squid gameThe first season followed Gi-hun as he tried to win a high-stakes competition filled with deadly versions of children’s games. Of the 456 contestants who started the competition, Seong finished last.
After making plans to put the harrowing events of the games behind him and meet his daughter in America, Seong changes his plans when he meets a representative from the games at the train station. Instead, he decides to go after Front Man and the people behind the games to put an end to them for good.
